Joey stopped at the doorway and looked at the woman. It would be so much easier for everyone except her if he would just give in and let what they had be enough, but he couldn’t do that. She deserved better, no matter what his dick wanted. Or what she thought she wanted. She didn’t deserve to be tainted like the rest of them.

Then what the fuck are you doing?

Shaking his head, he moved to the door and, because he had the commonsense God gave a goose, he checked the peephole. Alvise, just as he’d been expecting.

“I thought I told you to be here thirty minutes ago,” Joey said as he pulled the door open.

“Do you know how fucking busy that fancy coffee shop the girls love so much, is in the morning?” Alvise asked before turning to look behind him. “He opened the door, there’s was no need to hide. He knew I wouldn’t be able to ditch you at the house.” He looked back at his boss, “She’s sassy as hell today.”

“Do you know how long we’ve been standing out here?” Murphey asked.

“I thought you were going to leave her at home,” Joey deadpanned as the woman in question pushed past him, going straight to the bedroom.

“I tried, then the guy I was going to leave with her was unexpectantly called away, something about his idiot brother Carlo. I’m honestly shocked you allowed him to leave.”

“I’m shocked I allowed him to live.”

Chuckling, Alvise moved into the house, and into the kitchen where he deposited the bags he held on the table. “I was able to get everything but the order of French toast, I subbed it out for pancakes.”

“I guess pancakes will do.”

“Wait, the French toast was yours?”

“Yes.” Joey looked at his best friend, daring him to say something so he could slug him in the gut.

“So, why didn’t you kill him?”

“I wanted to. Fuck did I want to, but I didn’t want her to see that side of me. Not yet.”

“Does that mean you’re eventually going to show her?” Alvise asked as he started pulling things out of the bags.

“I hate when you do that.”

“Do what?”

“Refuse to look at me when you don’t want me to know what you’re thinking,” Joey collapsed into a dining chair and pulled a bag to him to start unpacking it.

“Are you going to show her?” He looked up, his face void of any opinion he may have had on the matter.

“No, she deserves better.”

“Aren’t you getting sick of sounding like a parrot who only knows one line?” Alvise asked.

“That depends, are you sick of being the second in command yet?”

“You know Deidrick not ready to take over yet,” Alvise stated. “Even when he is ready, you’re not going to be able to walk away free and clear. Just as Nonno, you, no, we are going to be required to help the process, smooth things over and, to some extent, always be part of it. This is not going away.”

“No, but I won’t have the blood on my hands.
